Plan microSD replacement before a field failure becomes a data loss event.

There is no universal card lifespan. Workload, NAND, controller behavior, temperature, power and the consequence of lost data all change the policy.

Decision rule

Set replacement intervals from measured write volume and business risk, then refine them with field returns. Do not promise a fixed number of years without a confirmed product and workload basis.

A practical risk-based policy.

Low-write, replaceable content

Monitor errors and replace on warning or during normal service. Keep a backed-up master image.

Frequent recording

Track daily write volume, card age and health warnings where the host exposes them. Plan preventive replacement.

Critical evidence or remote installations

Use conservative intervals, redundancy or off-card upload. A card should not be the only control protecting critical data.

Guidance a distributor can give its customer.

  1. Use a card capacity and class supported by the exact device.

  2. Format in the host when the device maker recommends it; otherwise use the SD Association formatter and confirm compatibility.

  3. Avoid removing power or the card while data is being written.

  4. Back up important files and investigate recurring format, mount or recording warnings.

  5. Replace preventively when the service policy says so; do not wait for the only copy of important data to fail.

Collect this before RMA.

  1. Device model, firmware and usage start date

  2. Card series, capacity, marking, order and batch identity

  3. Workload, daily operating time and approximate data written

  4. Exact symptom, first occurrence, frequency and reproduction steps

  5. Photos, device logs and whether the card is detected by another compatible reader
