01Separate total capacity from recording areas.
Some dashcams allocate space by purpose. Do not assume accumulated event clips follow normal-recording rules. Back up important footage, then check allocation, overwriting and protection in the manual. Confirm supported microSD capacity and file system. A card name does not guarantee loop operation or event retention.
| Recording type | Setting to check | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Normal recording | Allocated capacity and loop recording | The whole card may not be available to this area |
| Event recording | Protection and retention rules | Protected footage is not necessarily kept forever |
| Parking recording | Continuous, time-lapse or event mode | Modes produce different amounts of data |
| Manual saving | Locking and export method | Keep and play a separate copy of important footage |
02Parking time and storage time are different.
Parking recording depends on power settings. Storage time depends on allocated space and actual video data. A larger card cannot keep recording if power cuts off first. Explain both conditions separately.
03Use the allocated space in calculations.
For example, 20GB allocated to one area at a combined bitrate—the amount of data recorded per second—of 10Mbps gives about 4.4 hours by simple calculation. This decimal-unit example is hypothetical, not a guaranteed duration including file-management space or actual settings. Add front and rear bitrates when both record.
04Document tested rules for the product.
Brands and suppliers should record model, firmware, modes and area allocations, and recheck retention after settings change. Before formatting, copy important footage and confirm it plays. Use model, front/rear combined bitrate, parking mode and allocation to discuss sample validation and supply specifications.
